When the finishers are answered or the engine is interrupted, the deck keeps trading and rebuilding rather than folding. Eviscerator's Insight comes back from the graveyard with flashback, Witch's Cottage puts a dead creature back on top of the library, and Tithing Blade crafts into Consuming Sepulcher, an upkeep drain that wins without ever attacking. Even a fully stalled board is a win in waiting: Campfire and Lembas push your life total above the opponent's, and then Crypt Rats converts that gap into the finish.

Two weaknesses decide most of the losses. The deck presents almost no pressure before its fifth turn and its mana base leans on lands that enter tapped, so a fast clock or a burn-heavy draw can end the game before the card engine ever pays for itself; against that kind of start you cannot afford to spend the early turns setting up while taking hits. The maindeck also has no way to remove an artifact or enchantment, so a resolved noncreature engine or hate permanent stays on the battlefield for the whole game, and a plan that depends on removing it has to wait for Troublemaker Ouphe after boarding.

Fanatical Offering

Printed at , it draws two cards and creates a Map at instant speed in exchange for one spare artifact or creature. The right time to cast it is the end of the opponent's turn, after you know the removal mana held up during their turn was not needed. The Map is an artifact, so it becomes the fodder for the next Offering or Eviscerator's Insight, and with a spare mana on your own turn it can instead have a creature you control explore: a land goes straight to hand, anything else grows the creature and can be binned. Never cast it into an empty board; the sacrifice is a cost, so it needs an artifact or creature on the battlefield to be castable at all.

Eviscerator's Insight

The same cost and the same sacrifice as Fanatical Offering for two cards, but its flashback at makes it the deck's best late-game mana sink: a stalled board with a Plant and a spare Map turns into four more cards over two casts. The flashback lives in the graveyard, so graveyard exile from the opponent takes it away, and so does your own Spinning Darkness, which exiles the top three black cards of your graveyard to be cast for free; an Insight sitting near the top gets exiled with them, so decide which of the two spells you want before casting Spinning Darkness.

Troll of Khazad-dûm

Printed at as a 6/5 that can't be blocked except by three or more creatures, it is the deck's main way of actually attacking: a board that your removal has thinned cannot triple-block it, so it deals 6 a turn and ends the game in a few swings. For one mana it swampcycles instead, and in the early turns that is its main job, because this tapland-heavy mana base needs every land drop. Both Witch's Cottage and Haunted Mire carry the Swamp type, so the search can find an untapped black source or the second green source for Avenging Hunter, and a cycled Troll is not gone for good: Witch's Cottage can put it back on top of the library later.

Avenging Hunter

Five mana for a 5/4 trampler that takes the initiative when it enters, which sends you into Undercity immediately and again at each of your upkeeps for as long as you hold it, handing out a small bonus every turn. Outside of an initiative card of their own, the opponent takes the initiative only by dealing combat damage to you, and against a board your removal has already cleared that rarely happens, so the Hunter is both a fast clock and a value engine that keeps running even if the body is answered. Green comes only from Khalni Garden and Haunted Mire, so plan the land drops around it well before the fifth land.

Crypt Rats

Printed at as a 1/1, it does two jobs: it is the deck's sweeper against a board of small creatures, and it is the finisher once the board is empty and your life total is higher than the opponent's. X can be paid only with black mana, so Khalni Garden contributes nothing to it, and the damage hits every creature and every player, you included. The activation is instant speed, which is what makes it so hard to play around: with removal pointed at the Rats, activate in response for whatever black mana you have, and the damage resolves before the removal does.

Campfire

One mana to cast, then one mana and a tap each turn for 2 life. Against a deck that attacks your life total it turns every spare mana into a blank burn spell, and in a slow game it is what pushes your life total above the opponent's so that a big Crypt Rats activation kills them and not you. It is an artifact, so in a pinch it can be the sacrifice for Fanatical Offering or Eviscerator's Insight, but it is far more valuable staying on the battlefield.

Tithing Blade

An edict on entry: the opponent sacrifices a creature of their choice, which is at its best when they have exactly one creature that matters and at its worst against a wide board that hands over its worst body. Its second life is the craft at , which exiles the Blade along with a creature you control or a creature card from your graveyard and returns it as Consuming Sepulcher, an upkeep drain of 1 life each way that wins a stalled game without attacking.

Cast Down

Two mana at instant speed to destroy any nonlegendary creature, which makes it the premium answer in the deck and the card you hold mana up for on the opponent's turn before deciding whether to cast a draw spell at their end step. Save it for the creature that actually threatens you; cheap, small creatures are the job of Defile and Fungal Infection.

Defile

One black mana for -1/-1 per Swamp you control, so it starts small and ends up killing almost anything: with ten basics plus Haunted Mire and Witch's Cottage all counting, a mid-game Defile handles most creatures for one mana. It is the cheapest way to answer an early threat while still developing.

Snuff Out

Printed at , but with a Swamp on the battlefield you pay 4 life instead, which makes it the removal spell you can cast while fully tapped out for artifacts and draw spells. It destroys only nonblack creatures, so it is a dead card against a black board, and the life it costs is real against a deck that attacks your life total; spend it early, when the tempo of a free answer matters most and your life total is still high.

Unmake

Instant-speed exile for any creature, which covers the two things Cast Down cannot: legendary creatures and bodies that would otherwise come back from the graveyard. Its hybrid cost has to be paid with three black mana in this deck, so it is a card for once you have three black sources, not for the opening turns.

Spinning Darkness

Printed at , but almost always cast for free by exiling the top three black cards of your graveyard, dealing 3 damage to a nonblack creature and gaining you 3 life. That free cast arrives naturally once removal spells and a used Fanatical Offering have piled up, and the life matters in a race. It cannot touch black creatures, and the cards it exiles may include an Eviscerator's Insight you wanted to flash back, so check the graveyard before you cast it.

Fungal Infection

One mana to kill a 1-toughness creature at instant speed and leave a 1/1 Saproling behind. The token is the reason to run it over another removal spell: it is a chump blocker against a fast start, fodder for the next Fanatical Offering, and a creature for the craft on Tithing Blade. Aimed at a bigger creature it only shrinks it for the turn, which is still useful when combined with damage from Crypt Rats.

Suffocating Fumes

A one-sided -1/-1 to every creature the opponent controls at instant speed, which sweeps a board of 1-toughness creatures on its own. When there is nothing worth shrinking, it cycles for two mana, so it is never a dead draw.

Accursed Marauder

A two-mana edict that makes each player, you included, sacrifice a nontoken creature. Your own board is usually Plants, Saprolings, and the Marauder itself, so it eats itself while the opponent gives up their worst nontoken creature; tokens on their side are safe from it, which is when it does nothing. Treat the 2/1 body as incidental rather than a threat you plan to attack with.

Nihil Spellbomb

One mana for a graveyard exile you can hold on the battlefield until the moment the opponent needs their graveyard, and when it goes to the graveyard from the battlefield you may pay one black mana to draw a card. That second clause means it draws whether you crack it or sacrifice it to Fanatical Offering, so against an opponent who never touches their graveyard it is still a cheap artifact that replaces itself, the last thing you trim rather than the first.

Bojuka Bog

A tapped black source that exiles a graveyard as it enters, so it is graveyard hate that costs no card and no mana, only the tempo of a tapped land. It counts as a land drop, not a Swamp: Defile does not grow from it and swampcycling cannot find it. Hold it for the turn the exile matters when you can afford to, and play it as just a land when you cannot.

Witch's Cottage

A Swamp for every purpose, including Defile and swampcycling, that enters untapped once you control three other Swamps and then puts a creature card from your graveyard on top of your library. It is the rebuy for a cycled or killed Troll of Khazad-dûm or a dead Crypt Rats, and it is why the early swampcycle costs the deck nothing in the long run. Played before the third Swamp it enters tapped and the trigger never happens, so sequence it as the fourth land or later.

Vs. Control. Against control you take the beatdown role, slow as your threats are, because your removal is mostly dead and theirs is aimed at very few targets. Deploy Troll of Khazad-dûm as a threat rather than cycling it, cast Avenging Hunter for the initiative value that keeps flowing even if the body is answered, and craft Tithing Blade into Consuming Sepulcher as soon as you have the mana and a creature to exile, whether a Plant token or a creature card in your graveyard: the craft is an activated ability, so once the Blade itself has resolved, a counterspell cannot stop the transformation, and the drain then runs without any further spell to interact with. The draw engine keeps your hand full of threats for their answers, and the flashback on Eviscerator's Insight gives you the last word in a topdeck war.

Vs. Combo. Against combo you are the beatdown, and an uncomfortable one, because your clock is slow and your removal has little to hit. The disruption you do have is graveyard hate, Nihil Spellbomb and Bojuka Bog, plus edicts for a combo that relies on a single creature, so the play that demonstrates the role is timing the Spellbomb: hold it on the battlefield untouched by sacrifice spells until the opponent has committed cards to the graveyard, then crack it in response rather than proactively. Pressure matters more here than card count, so the Troll comes down as a threat and the end-step draw spells are cast only when they do not cost you a turn of development.

Cast Accursed Marauder as an edict you expect to lose, not as a 2-power body. Its trigger makes each player sacrifice a nontoken creature, and this deck's own board is usually tokens plus the Marauder itself, so it eats itself unless another nontoken creature stands in for it. An opposing board of only tokens gives up nothing at all, so hold it until the opponent has a real creature worth the exchange.
