Flicker Tron Mulligan Guide

Introduction

Flicker Tron is a ramp deck that assembles Urza's Tower, Urza's Mine and Urza's Power Plant for a mana lead no fair deck can match, spends that mana on cheap artifacts that scry and draw, and wins because every one of those spells makes the Wizard tokens from Mysidian Elder deal damage to the opponent, with Ghostly Flicker adding Wizards and Bramble Wurm and Kaervek's Torch finishing what the pings started. It is a small slice of the field at 1.3%, but it has been putting up results: ManM23 took 4th of 1,086 players at the Paupergeddon Summer 2026 Main Event on July 11, lumely finished 2nd in the MTGO Pauper Challenge on August 16, and copies have kept posting 5-0 league finishes through late September.

The deck does best against slower decks built around a value engine, where its mana lead and repeated card draw outlast a fight over a few key permanents. It is favored against Dimir Terror and White Aggro, and slightly favored against Grixis Affinity and Familiars.

It struggles against fast creature decks that attack before the Urza's lands come together and against decks that back cheap creatures with counterspells aimed at its few payoffs. It is slightly unfavored against Mono Red Madness and Madness Burn, and unfavored against Blue Terror, Elves, Dimir Faeries, Spy Combo, Jund Wildfire, Mono Blue Faeries, Bogles, Gruul Ponza, Esper Affinity, Golgari Gardens, Gruul Ramp, and Black Sacrifice.

General Strategy

Flicker Tron wants to have more mana than the opponent as early as possible and then turn every spare point of it into damage. Urza's Tower, Urza's Mine and Urza's Power Plant together produce a flood of colorless mana, and the deck fills that mana with cheap artifacts such as Candy Trail, Giant's Boulder and Lembas, each of which scries or draws on the way in. Once Mysidian Elder is on the battlefield, every one of those artifacts also makes its Wizard token deal damage to the opponent, and Ghostly Flicker returns the Elder for another Wizard so that each later spell hits harder. The priority that decides most games is finding the missing Urza's land: every early play should dig toward it, because Mysidian Elder can come down early but the bigger payoffs, such as the seven-mana Bramble Wurm, wait on that mana.

The engine starts with the lands. The three Urza's lands make seven mana between them, Expedition Map finds whichever one is missing, and Giant's Boulder, Barrels of Blasting Jelly and Conduit Pylons turn colorless mana into the blue, red and green the spells need. That mana runs a stream of one- and two-mana artifacts, Candy Trail, Giant's Boulder, Lembas and Cryogen Relic, and each of them is a noncreature spell, so with Mysidian Elder in play every Wizard token deals 1 damage to the opponent as it is cast. Ghostly Flicker exiles two of our permanents at instant speed and returns them, re-using their enter triggers: a new Wizard from the Elder, two fresh cards from , two from (one as it leaves, one as it comes back), and the Flicker is itself a noncreature spell that pings on the way. Nothing in the deck returns from the graveyard, so this is a repeatable value engine rather than an infinite loop, and each copy has to be spent on the moment that earns the most.

The Cards

Urza's Tower

The biggest of the three Urza's lands and the one that makes the full set worth seven mana rather than six. It is the piece to prioritize when Expedition Map has a choice, since a hand with Mine and Power Plant but no Tower is stuck on one mana per land. Once all three are down, a flickered Tower comes back untapped and taps for three again, which pays for the Ghostly Flicker that moved it.

Urza's Mine

One of the two smaller halves of the set, worth two mana once the other two Urza's lands are in play and one on its own. With the full set assembled, it is the land you tap first when you only need a little mana, keeping Urza's Tower untapped for the bigger spell later in the turn.

Urza's Power Plant

The other two-mana half of the set, identical in function to Urza's Mine. Drawing a second copy of either of the smaller lands is a common way to be stuck one piece short, which is why the early artifacts are spent digging rather than held.

Expedition Map

The most reliable way to complete the Urza's lands: one mana to cast, two to crack, and it finds any land in the deck. Most games it fetches the missing Urza's land, but it also fetches Bojuka Bog when the opponent's graveyard matters or the single Island or Forest when colored mana is the problem. Crack it before casting a scry artifact, since the search shuffles the library and would undo the scry.

Role Assignment

Flicker Tron is a ramp deck with a semi-interactive shell and very high inevitability: if the game goes long, the mana lead, the two-for-ones from Mulldrifter, Cryogen Relic and a flickered Mysidian Elder, and the Wizards' repeatable damage win almost every long game. Its interaction is real but mana-hungry and narrow: Barrels of Blasting Jelly and a Kaervek's Torch aimed at a creature for removal, Giant's Boulder at seven mana for any permanent, and Bojuka Bog for the graveyard, with no counterspells and no sweeper in the maindeck. Every matchup is fought along a few axes: how fast the three Urza's lands come together against the opponent's ability to race or destroy them, whether 0/1 Wizards survive one-damage effects, how the slow first turns hold up against early pressure, the fight over the few payoffs, and whether the fixing artifacts that carry every colored spell stay on the battlefield.

Vs. Aggro. Against aggro you are the control deck, and an uncomfortable one, because the first turns only scry and draw while the opponent attacks. The job is to survive to the point where the engine takes over, not to race: Bramble Wurm is the card that flips the board, blocking fliers and ground creatures alike with reach and gaining 5 life on arrival, and Barrels of Blasting Jelly is reserved for the creature doing the most damage. The defining play is spending Ghostly Flicker on Bramble Wurm for another 5 life even when Mysidian Elder is not there to take the second target for another Wizard; the damage can wait, the life total cannot.

Vs. Midrange. Against midrange you are the control deck by default and the beatdown only once the Urza's lands are assembled. Their plan is to trade one for one with efficient creatures and removal, and every trade they make is a losing one against a deck whose best spells draw two cards and whose creatures come back for a second enter trigger. The play that shows the role is a hard-cast followed by on it and at the end of their turn, four cards for one spell, while their removal finds nothing worth killing.

Play Patterns

Spend Candy Trail, Giant's Boulder, Lembas and Cryogen Relic in the first turns to find the Urza's lands instead of saving them for Wizard pings. Until all three lands are down, each cheap artifact is a look at the missing piece and often the colored mana the payoffs will need, and that is worth far more than a point of damage later; holding them stalls a deck that plays few lands and depends on finding the right ones. The exception is a turn where Mysidian Elder is castable as well: cast the Elder first so that every artifact that follows pings.
Shuffle first, scry second: crack Expedition Map or sacrifice Lembas before casting Candy Trail or Giant's Boulder, not after. Both the Map's search and the Lembas returning to the library shuffle it, which throws away whatever order a scry left: the card you kept on top is gone before you draw it, and the cards you sent to the bottom are back in the mix. Played in the right order, the same shuffle is a free way to clear a top card you already know you do not want, and the scry that follows looks at a fresh library.
Cast Ghostly Flicker on an evoked Mulldrifter while its sacrifice trigger is still waiting on the stack. Evoking puts two triggers on the stack, the draw and the sacrifice; let the draw-two resolve, then flicker the Mulldrifter in response to the sacrifice. The Mulldrifter that returns is a new creature that was never evoked, so the sacrifice finds nothing, and you have drawn two cards and kept a 2/2 flier for less mana than hard-casting it and flickering it later. Waiting for the first draw to resolve also means the Flicker's second target is chosen with the new cards in hand. The line needs two blue mana in one turn, so it takes two blue sources from among the Island, Conduit Pylons and the fixing artifacts, since each of those makes only one colored mana a turn.
Against open removal mana, hold as the answer to the removal aimed at or instead of casting it first. Flickered in response, the creature comes back as a new permanent the removal spell can no longer find, and its enter trigger still pays out, a fresh Wizard or another 5 life. Cast proactively, the Flicker lets the opponent kill the creature in response, which leaves only the other target flickered, or kill it the moment it returns, having lost nothing. The instant-speed Flicker is worth more as insurance than as a main-phase value play whenever the opponent is holding mana up.

Black Sacrifice

Matchup - Unfavored

Black Sacrifice is the beatdown here and we are the control deck, whether we like it or not. Their creatures cost one or two mana and start attacking right away while our early artifacts only scry and draw, so they are well ahead on speed and the play matters more to them than to us: going first gives their one-mana creatures an extra attack before our first blocker, and the extra card we get on the draw rarely makes that up because our opening plays do not touch the board. They have to win before the Urza's lands and Bramble Wurm come together, and their removal only needs to clear our few blockers and Wizard tokens to get there. Our own mainboard answers (Barrels of Blasting Jelly, Giant's Boulder and Kaervek's Torch) cost far too much to keep up with a board of 1/1s, so we do not win this by trading removal. We win it by blocking with Mysidian Elder and Bramble Wurm and gaining life, because a deck of 1-toughness creatures has little left in a long game against our card draw and Wizard pings. Once our mana is online, every draw adds a blocker or more damage, and the lifegain stretches the game past what Rite of Consumption can drain, but getting there is the hard part, and the matchup is unfavored.

In game one, dig for the Urza's lands with Candy Trail, Giant's Boulder and Lembas, and once their 1/1s start connecting, spend spare mana sacrificing Candy Trail and Lembas for 3 life each; that life buys the turns Bramble Wurm needs. Cast Mysidian Elder only with mana left for a cheap artifact. We get priority as soon as the Wizard token is made, so its first ping goes on the stack before a Shambling Ghast they sacrifice can kill the 0/1, and killing the Wizard in response does not stop that ping. Evoke Mulldrifter only with Ghostly Flicker ready for the sacrifice trigger, or hard-cast it: a plain evoke sacrifice puts a counter on Mortician Beetle and grows whatever wears Sadistic Glee.

Hold Ghostly Flicker for the targeted removal aimed at Bramble Wurm or Mysidian Elder (Snuff Out, or Tragic Slip once a sacrifice has turned on morbid, in the lists that run them). The creature comes back as a new permanent the spell can no longer find, with a fresh enter trigger: 5 more life or a new Wizard. Keep Mysidian Elder or a Mulldrifter on the battlefield next to the Wurm, because Accursed Marauder makes us sacrifice as it resolves and Flicker cannot dodge that. When a Carrion Feeder or Mortician Beetle has grown counters, remove it before their main phase; Barrels of Blasting Jelly does this at instant speed. Rite of Consumption sacrifices as a cost, so once it is cast that creature's power is a drain we cannot stop.

Key Threats

Carrion Feeder is their free sacrifice outlet and main attacker, and it is the reason our removal rarely trades cleanly: they sacrifice the targeted creature in response, or sacrifice Shambling Ghast at instant speed to kill a Wizard token. It also turns on morbid for Tragic Slip and keeps every creature fed to it as a +1/+1 counter. Do not let it grow unchecked: Rite of Consumption sacrifices it for its full power, a drain we cannot respond to that also gains them that much life.

Rite of Consumption is their burst finish and their answer to our Wizard damage. A grown Carrion Feeder or a Bloodthrone Vampire pumped by sacrifices becomes a drain we cannot interrupt once it is cast, and the life it gains them pushes our Wizard and Kaervek's Torch kill further away. Never leave their biggest creature alive into their turn when we can remove it: they attack with it, then cast the Rite in their second main phase so its power hits us twice, once in combat and again as the drain.

Shambling Ghast, in most lists, is their cleanest answer to our Wizard tokens. Sacrificed to Carrion Feeder or Bloodthrone Vampire at instant speed, its death trigger shrinks a 0/1 Wizard to nothing, so a Wizard can die right after its first ping. The mistake to avoid is casting Mysidian Elder with nothing left to cast: they sacrifice the Ghast before our next noncreature spell and the Wizard dies without pinging once.

Mortician Beetle counts sacrifices by either player. Our evoked Mulldrifter and both halves of an Accursed Marauder edict feed it on top of their own Carrion Feeder and Village Rites sacrifices, so evoking Mulldrifter without Ghostly Flicker ready hands them a counter for free.

Accursed Marauder, in many builds mainboard, is an answer Ghostly Flicker cannot beat: each player sacrifices a nontoken creature as it resolves, so it takes Bramble Wurm whenever the Wurm is our only nontoken creature, and Unearth can return it to do it again. Our Wizard tokens are immune. Running the Wurm out alone is how it punishes us, with both sacrifices putting counters on Mortician Beetle.

Sideboard Plan

In:

3 Breath Weapon
3 Moment's Peace
2 Cast Down

Out:

4 Cryogen Relic
2 Expedition Map
2 Mulldrifter

Breath Weapon comes in because every creature card Black Sacrifice plays has 1 toughness, so cast during their attack it kills every unpumped creature they have. Sacrifices in response can keep one Bloodthrone Vampire or Carrion Feeder alive, and their death triggers leave tokens behind, but it still trades one card for several. It also kills our Wizard tokens and Mulldrifter, so cast it before Mysidian Elder when possible.

Moment's Peace comes in because Rite of Consumption is their only damage outside combat, so each copy, cast and then flashed back, takes away two of their attacks while we finish the Urza's lands and land Bramble Wurm. Three rather than four: a fog does not remove Carrion Feeder's counters or stop the Rite drain, so that slot goes to Cast Down, which removes the creature they would sacrifice to it.

Cast Down comes in as a two-mana instant for the creature they build around: a Carrion Feeder or Mortician Beetle with counters, or whatever wears Sadistic Glee. Cast it before their main phase, since Rite of Consumption sacrifices as a cost and cannot be answered once cast. They will sacrifice the target in response, but its counters or the Aura go with it. Black mana comes from Bojuka Bog or a fixing artifact.

Cryogen Relic goes out because, unlike Candy Trail and Lembas, it gains no life against their attacks and Rite of Consumption. Its blue cost competes with Ghostly Flicker for fixing that now also has to make red for Breath Weapon, green for Moment's Peace and black for Cast Down, and its stun holds down only one tapped attacker for a single untap while the rest of their board keeps attacking.

Two Expedition Map go out because each Map costs 3 mana in total to put one land in hand while their one-mana creatures attack, whereas Crop Rotation puts the land straight onto the battlefield for one mana plus the sacrifice of a land we already control. Two Maps stay because finding the third Urza's land is still what makes Bramble Wurm castable in time.

Two Mulldrifter go out because, evoked without Ghostly Flicker ready, its sacrifice puts a counter on Mortician Beetle and grows whatever wears Sadistic Glee, and our own Breath Weapon kills it. Two stay because, hard-cast, it still draws two toward the Urza's lands and blocks Infestation Sage's flying Insect tokens.

Sideboarding moves this matchup a fair way in our favor: we gain a sweeper against a deck whose every creature card has 1 toughness and three fogs that each take away two of their attacks, while their additions are more one-for-one answers aimed at our few payoffs, which Ghostly Flicker fights only when they are Snuff Out or Tragic Slip.

Post-board Strategy

Breath Weapon is the card that changes this matchup: with an instant sweeper against a deck whose every creature card has 1 toughness, and Moment's Peace taking away two of their combats per copy, we no longer need the Urza's lands and Bramble Wurm on time just to survive. Cast Breath Weapon during their attack once attackers are declared, and most of the attack dies before dealing damage. Expect them to sacrifice creatures in response to keep a Bloodthrone Vampire or Carrion Feeder above 2 toughness, and expect Nested Shambler, Infestation Sage and Nezumi Linkbreaker to leave tokens behind, so plan to face one grown creature and a few fresh 1/1s, not an empty board. It also kills our own Wizard tokens and Mulldrifter, so cast it before Mysidian Elder when we can. If the Elder is already out, each Wizard still pings once as Breath Weapon is cast, but a Shambling Ghast that dies to it can give the damaged Elder -1/-1 and finish it off.

Moment's Peace does nothing about Rite of Consumption, and Carrion Feeder keeps its counters through it, so use the time it buys to finish the Urza's lands and land Bramble Wurm. Cast it in their declare blockers step, ideally after they have sacrificed creatures to pump Bloodthrone Vampire, so those sacrifices are wasted. Cast Down is for the creature they are building around, a Carrion Feeder or Mortician Beetle with counters or whatever wears Sadistic Glee, and it has to land before their main phase, because once Rite of Consumption is cast its sacrifice is already paid.

Their sideboard aims at our few payoffs, and the race after boarding is about keeping Bramble Wurm and Ghostly Flicker in hand and on the battlefield through that:

Mesmeric Fiend takes Bramble Wurm, Ghostly Flicker or Kaervek's Torch from our hand, and with Carrion Feeder or Bloodthrone Vampire out they can sacrifice it while its enter trigger is on the stack to exile the card for good. If the Fiend stays on the battlefield after taking a card, killing it with Breath Weapon or Cast Down returns that card to our hand.
Rotten Reunion can exile Moment's Peace from our graveyard before we flash it back, or Bramble Wurm before we use its 5-life ability, and its 2/2 Zombie token is one more creature to sacrifice. With three mana including green open we can exile the Wurm for its 5 life in response.
More Tragic Slip kills a 0/1 Wizard for one mana without morbid, and once a sacrifice turns morbid on it kills Bramble Wurm at instant speed. Ghostly Flicker in response still saves the Wurm.
More Accursed Marauder is the edict our Wizard tokens are immune to and Ghostly Flicker cannot dodge, so keep Mysidian Elder or a Mulldrifter next to the Wurm as the creature we give up; both sacrifices grow Mortician Beetle.
More Snuff Out is free removal for Mysidian Elder and Bramble Wurm that Ghostly Flicker beats in response. It cannot target the black Wizard tokens, and the 4 life it costs them brings our Wizard and Kaervek's Torch kill closer.
