Boros Moxite Mulligan Guide

Introduction

Boros Moxite is a red-white artifact deck that keeps its hand full by recasting Melded Moxite off Glint Hawk and Kor Skyfisher bounces, brings Sneaky Snacker back from the graveyard for free off those draws, clears the way with Lightning Bolt, Galvanic Blast, and Dispatch, and wins with a steady stream of small flyers backed by burn. It is a small slice of the field at 0.5%, so most opponents will see it only occasionally.

The results are better than the share suggests. Alexander H. won the Pauper APS Autumn Tournament on September 26, 2026, with Dennis D. also finishing in that event's Top 8, and two copies went 6-2 at C'mon! Katowice on September 19. On Magic Online the deck has posted a steady run of 5-0 League results through the summer and into late September, with occasional finishes in the top half of the Challenge series.

The deck beats creature aggro decks that fight on the board, where its cheap removal lines up against their creatures and its flyers attack over them, and the mono-blue decks that back small flyers with counterspells and try to trade one for one against a hand that keeps refilling. It is favored against Mono Red Madness, Mono Blue Faeries, Mono Red Rally, Esper Affinity, Golgari Gardens, Dimir Terror, White Aggro, Madness Burn, and Flicker Tron, and slightly favored against Blue Terror and Elves.

It struggles against control decks that answer creatures one at a time and grind past a slow clock, and against ramp decks that go over the top with threats too large for burn to kill and big enough to wall the air. It is slightly unfavored against Monster Tron, and unfavored against Dimir Faeries, Grixis Affinity, Jeskai Ephemerate, Dimir Control, and Gruul Ramp.

General Strategy

Boros Moxite plays a fair game of creatures and removal, but it plays it with a hand that never empties. Melded Moxite, Ragged Short Spear, and Pursue the Past turn the worst card in your hand into fresh ones, Glint Hawk and Kor Skyfisher pick the spent artifact back up so you can do it again, and Sneaky Snacker, a card this mana base can never cast, comes back from the graveyard as a free flyer whenever those draws pile up. The removal is cheap and the threats are small, so the games are won by being the player with more cards and more flyers after every exchange, not by racing. The priority that matters most is keeping the draw loop running: every bounce creature should be picking up a spent artifact, every discard should be a card you did not need, and the attacks follow from that.

The engine is a loop of three parts. Each of the discard pieces lets you pitch a card to draw two, and Melded Moxite and Ragged Short Spear stay on the battlefield afterward as artifacts. Glint Hawk returns an artifact you control when it enters (or is sacrificed) and Kor Skyfisher returns any permanent, so each one puts a two-power flyer on the table and a used draw-two back in hand to be recast. The third part is Sneaky Snacker: your draw step plus one draw-two is three cards drawn in a turn, which is exactly what returns a Snacker from the graveyard, so the Snacker you discard to the Moxite comes back tapped the same turn as a free 2/1 flyer, and keeps coming back every time you draw three.

A game with the deck has three phases. The setup is an artifact land followed by a draw-two piece with a Snacker pitched to it, so that by your second land you have a flyer on the battlefield and a full hand. The payoff is the bounce creatures: Glint Hawk and Kor Skyfisher rebuy the Moxite or Spear for another two cards while adding bodies to the air, and as the artifact lands accumulate, metalcraft switches on, so deals four and exiles whatever tries to block. The close is combat damage from the flyers (, , and ) with the last points coming from , , and pointed at the face.

The Cards

Melded Moxite

The card the deck is named for and the center of the draw loop: two mana for an artifact that lets you pitch a card and draw two the moment it lands, then sits on the battlefield counting toward metalcraft and waiting to be picked up by Glint Hawk or Kor Skyfisher for another two cards. It is the best permanent to bounce in the deck, since every recast is a fresh discard-and-draw. Late in a game where you are flooding, pay three and sacrifice it for a tapped 2/2 Robot rather than let it sit idle; the token is a real attacker and a body for Makeshift Munitions.

Glint Hawk

A one-mana 2/2 flyer that only stays if you return an artifact to hand, which in this deck is a feature: it rebuys a spent Melded Moxite or Ragged Short Spear for another draw-two, and that recast often brings a Sneaky Snacker back with it. Hold it until a spent draw-two is on the table rather than casting it on the first turn by returning an artifact land; the early version costs you a land drop and a turn of development for a 2/2, and returning a Robot token simply destroys the token. An opponent who kills your only artifact in response to the trigger forces the sacrifice, so with a single artifact out, cast it only when the body is worth that risk.

Kor Skyfisher

Two mana for a 2/3 flyer that returns any permanent you control, so it does everything Glint Hawk does with a bigger body and no risk of dying to its own trigger. It is the best blocker in the deck, holding off two-power attackers while the flyers race. When there is no spent artifact to pick up and no land in hand, tap a basic or an untapped-entering artifact land for mana first, let the Skyfisher return that land, and replay it untapped as your land drop: the land has already paid toward the Skyfisher, so you net an extra mana that turn instead of losing a permanent. Returning or a tapped-entering dual hands that mana back, and returning a token destroys it.

Role Assignment

Boros Moxite is a midrange deck with a tempo-neutral curve, a medium density of interaction (twelve cheap targeted removal spells in Lightning Bolt, Galvanic Blast, and Dispatch, plus Makeshift Munitions, and no counterspells, discard, or edicts), and medium inevitability from the draw loop. Its clock of two-power flyers is slow, so which role it takes depends on whether the opponent's plan is on the board where the removal reaches it, and whether the game is going long enough for repeated draw-twos to matter.

Vs. Aggro. Against aggro you are the control deck. The opponent is faster, and your removal is at its best against cheap creatures, so the early turns are about killing attackers and blocking with Kor Skyfisher rather than racing in the air. The play that defines the role is pointing Galvanic Blast at their best creature instead of their face, and holding Prismatic Strands for the turn they commit their whole board. Once the board is clear, the flyers and the burn finish a game the opponent has already run out of cards for.

Vs. Midrange. Against other midrange decks neither side is fast, and the game is decided by who wins the resource exchange, which is the axis this deck is built for. You start as the control deck, trading removal for their creatures one for one, and become the beatdown once the loop is running: every Glint Hawk or Kor Skyfisher that rebuys Melded Moxite is a two-for-one, and Sneaky Snacker makes any of their one-for-one removal that does not exile it cost them a card. The play that demonstrates it is using a bounce creature to rebuy a draw-two rather than to add a body when both are available. The exception is a midrange opponent who destroys artifacts: with the lands under attack and metalcraft off, the engine is the thing being traded away, and you need to get damage in before it is.

Vs. Control. Against control you are the beatdown. Their removal and card draw outclass a slow clock if you give them time, so the flyers attack from the second turn and the burn is saved for the face. is the key piece, since removal that leaves it in the graveyard only delays it and every three-draw turn puts it back, and a deck that wins by trading one for one cannot keep up with a threat that returns for free. The play that defines the role is leading with a flyer on the first turn and holding as reach rather than spending it on an early blocker.

Play Patterns

Pitch Sneaky Snacker, and every extra copy you draw, to the discard half of Melded Moxite, Ragged Short Spear, or Pursue the Past instead of a land or a spell. The Snacker does nothing in hand, since this mana base cannot cast it, and the draw step plus a draw-two is three draws in a turn, so a Snacker discarded on your own turn returns tapped that same turn as a free 2/1 flyer. Every copy sitting in the graveyard triggers off the same third draw, so extra Snackers pitched on earlier turns all come back together rather than one at a time; discarding a land or a burn spell to protect a Snacker you cannot cast throws away a real card to keep a blank.
Hold Glint Hawk until a spent Melded Moxite or Ragged Short Spear is on the table for it to pick up, rather than cashing it in early by returning an artifact land. Returning a land you still need costs a land drop and a turn of development for a 2/2, and returning a Robot token simply destroys it, while the same Hawk a turn or two later rebuys a draw-two and often brings a Sneaky Snacker back with it.
Resolve Galvanic Blast and Dispatch while you still control three artifacts, either before Glint Hawk or Kor Skyfisher picks one up or in response to that bounce trigger. Both spells check your artifact count only as they resolve, and artifact lands count, so a bounce in the same turn can drop you to two artifacts and shrink the Blast to two damage or reduce the Dispatch to a plain tap. The same check lets the opponent answer by killing an artifact in response, so keep a fourth artifact around when you can.
Pay Prismatic Strands' flashback by tapping a white creature that just entered or stayed home, never one you want attacking. The flashback cost taps any untapped white creature you control and is not that creature's own tap ability, so a or cast this turn can pay it while your other flyers swing. Attackers are already tapped once declared and cannot pay it, and is blue-black and never can, so plan the attack with one white body left back on the turns you expect to need the fog.

Black Sacrifice

Matchup

Black Sacrifice is the beatdown here and we take the control role. Their deck goldfishes faster than ours, since about three-quarters of their nonland cards cost one mana and their sacrifice outlets cost nothing to use, so they widen the board and start growing Carrion Feeder before our draw-twos pay off, and nine of our nineteen lands entering tapped makes that gap wider on the draw. What they lack is staying power: a board of one-mana 1/1s does little without a payoff in play, and a deck that fades against one-for-one removal backed by extra cards is exactly what rebought Melded Moxite draw-twos and free Sneaky Snacker returns punish. Nothing in their main deck touches our graveyard, and Unearth and Supernatural Stamina only bring back bare creatures without the counters they had built. The game turns on whether our burn and Dispatch remove their payoffs before fodder sacrificed in response pushes them out of range; once that is done, our flyers attack over a board whose only flying blockers are Insect tokens, while their light removal (Shambling Ghast's death trigger, Accursed Marauder's forced sacrifice in many builds, and Snuff Out or Tragic Slip in some lists) trades one-for-one with our creatures.

Removal goes to Carrion Feeder, Mortician Beetle, Bloodthrone Vampire, and whatever wears Sadistic Glee. Nested Shambler, Infestation Sage, and Nezumi Linkbreaker leave a token behind when they die and get sacrificed in response anyway, so burn pointed at them is a wasted card. Burn the payoffs while they have few creatures to sacrifice in response, because three spare bodies grow Carrion Feeder past Lightning Bolt. Once fodder piles up, switch to Dispatch with three artifacts in play: it exiles, so growing the target in response doesn't save it and Supernatural Stamina can't bring it back. A grown creature has to be removed before they get a main phase to cast Rite of Consumption with it, since the sacrifice is a cost and there is no responding once the spell is cast. When the board is too wide to answer piece by piece, Prismatic Strands naming black during their attack blanks every black attacker for the whole turn and a post-combat Rite of Consumption along with it, which then gains them no life.

Our own sacrifices feed them too. With Mortician Beetle on the board, feed Makeshift Munitions spent noncreature artifacts rather than creatures, and don't let Glint Hawk sacrifice itself to its own trigger. When Accursed Marauder forces a sacrifice, give up Sneaky Snacker, which comes back the next time we draw a third card in a turn. Block with Kor Skyfisher only when the attacker can't grow, meaning no spare creature to sacrifice and no black mana open for Supernatural Stamina; otherwise keep the flyers attacking, since Insect tokens are the only creatures they have that can block them.

Key Threats

Carrion Feeder is their main clock and the first target for our early burn. It is a free sacrifice outlet whose counters are permanent, so every fodder creature they cash in, in combat or in response to our removal, makes it a bigger attacker and a bigger Rite of Consumption. Do not aim Lightning Bolt at it once they have three spare creatures: they sacrifice all three in response, keep a 4/4 Feeder plus the fodder's death triggers, and our burn is spent for nothing.

Mortician Beetle grows off every sacrifice by either player, so our own lines feed it on top of everything their outlets do. A Glint Hawk sacrificed to its own trigger, a creature fed to Makeshift Munitions, or the creature we give up to Accursed Marauder each hands them a free counter, so while the Beetle is out, every sacrifice we make has to be worth the growth it gives them.

Rite of Consumption works against our burn race from both ends: it drains for the sacrificed creature's power and gains them that much life. Leaving a grown Carrion Feeder or a pumped Bloodthrone Vampire alive past their combat invites a post-combat sacrifice for its full power to our face, so our instant removal has to land before they cast it rather than in response.

Bloodthrone Vampire makes both our blocks and our burn unreliable. Each sacrifice gives it +2/+2 until end of turn, so one spare creature beats a Kor Skyfisher block and two put it out of Lightning Bolt range. Never block it with Skyfisher while they have a spare creature: one sacrifice after blocks kills our flyer while the Vampire survives, and the pumped Vampire then feeds Rite of Consumption after combat.

Sideboard Plan

In:

2 Electrickery
2 Prismatic Strands
2 Thraben Charm

Out:

2 Soul-Guide Lantern
3 Lembas
1 Pursue the Past

Electrickery comes in because every creature card Black Sacrifice plays has 1 toughness, so the overload (two mana, at instant speed) kills all of them that haven't grown, plus their 1/1 tokens. Fodder they sacrifice in response to save Carrion Feeder or Bloodthrone Vampire dies anyway, and the one-mana mode picks off an Insect token or a fresh payoff.

The extra copies of Prismatic Strands come in because naming black prevents damage from every nontoken creature they cast and from Rite of Consumption, so one copy cast during their big attack blanks both the swing and the post-combat drain. Spare copies are draw-two pitches we flash back by tapping a white creature that stayed home.

Thraben Charm comes in to kill a Carrion Feeder or Mortician Beetle that has grown past burn range at instant speed: it deals twice our creature count, so four damage with two flyers out. Its other modes destroy Sadistic Glee or exile their graveyard before Unearth returns a payoff.

Soul-Guide Lantern goes out because their graveyard matters only for Unearth returning a single one- or two-mana creature, so the exile modes rarely change a game decided on the battlefield. It mostly just cashes in for a card, the weakest use of two slots here.

Lembas goes out because two mana for one card and no board presence is too slow against their one-drops, and its 3 life costs two more mana. Unlike Melded Moxite and Ragged Short Spear, it can't pitch Sneaky Snacker.

One Pursue the Past is trimmed. The other two still pitch Sneaky Snacker and gain life against their attacks, but this is the only draw-two that Glint Hawk and Kor Skyfisher can't rebuy and that doesn't count toward Dispatch's metalcraft, and its four-mana flashback is the slowest part of the engine against their one-drops.

Sideboarding shifts this pairing a moderate step in our favor: we gain a one-sided sweeper against a deck whose creatures all share 1 toughness, plus more fogs and a scaling instant-speed kill spell, while their best additions are graveyard exile aimed at Sneaky Snacker and more one-for-one removal, and their one sweeper, Drown in Sorrow, kills most of their own board along with Glint Hawk and Sneaky Snacker.

Post-board Strategy

Electrickery is the biggest change: every creature card they play has 1 toughness, so the overload kills all of them that haven't grown, along with their 1/1 tokens, while they bring in graveyard exile to cut off Sneaky Snacker's returns. Unless we need the sweep to survive an attack, cast it at the end of their turn or on our own turn rather than mid-combat. Anything they sacrifice to save Bloodthrone Vampire then pumps a creature that isn't attacking, and only the counters from Carrion Feeder, Mortician Beetle, and Sadistic Glee stick; the fodder dies whether or not they sacrifice it. The tokens from its death triggers arrive after the sweep and survive it, and a Shambling Ghast dying to it can still kill a Sneaky Snacker with its -1/-1. Whatever grows out of range goes to Dispatch or to Thraben Charm, which deals twice our creature count, or can instead destroy Sadistic Glee or exile their graveyard ahead of an Unearth.

Expect graveyard exile aimed at Sneaky Snacker. Rotten Reunion is in nearly every sideboard and Nihil Spellbomb in many, and both work at instant speed, so either can remove Snacker in response to its return trigger or strip a Prismatic Strands before we flash it back. Pitching spare Strands to Melded Moxite and Ragged Short Spear is still right. With a Spellbomb on their board, though, flash back Strands and Pursue the Past at the first good chance rather than banking them, and treat a pitched Snacker as a bonus rather than the plan. The Reunion's decayed 2/2 Zombie also survives Electrickery and feeds their sacrifice outlets.

Their extra removal thins our flyers: Tragic Slip, switched on by any free sacrifice, plus Spinning Darkness and Snuff Out in some lists, neither of which can target Sneaky Snacker, though Spinning Darkness gains them 3 life against our burn while Snuff Out costs them 4. Some builds add Mutagenic Growth, which saves a creature from Electrickery or a two-damage Galvanic Blast and turns a dying Nested Shambler into three Squirrels, which makes Dispatch's exile the answer that sticks. Seventeen artifacts remain in the post-board 60 (the ten artifact lands, Melded Moxite, and Ragged Short Spear), so plan to keep three in play, and when Dispatch is the answer to a grown Carrion Feeder or Mortician Beetle, resolve it before Glint Hawk or Kor Skyfisher picks up an artifact. Some lists also bring Drown in Sorrow, which kills Glint Hawk and Sneaky Snacker but not Kor Skyfisher and takes most of their own board with it, and Vampiric Link, which on their biggest attacker or on our Skyfisher gains them life our burn then has to make up; Thraben Charm's enchantment mode removes it.
